Incident

Newly uploaded images not displaying

Issue summary:
On September 24, 2020 starting at 12:14 p.m PDT, customers experienced issues uploading images from their desktop client, where a blank screen showed when they opened the full size image preview. Images uploaded before or after that time were unaffected.

We traced the problem to a recent code change, which inadvertently caused image uploads to fail. At 2:18 p.m. PDT, we deployed a fix allowing all future images to be uploaded successfully without issues viewing them. At 3:03 p.m. PDT, we deployed another fix allowing customers to view the images uploaded before 2:18 p.m PDT.

In order to ensure there was no lasting impact of this issue, we identified and reprocessed the affected images, and we completed this work on September 29, 2020 at 1:25 p.m. PDT.

5:32 PM PST

The fix has been fully released and all images should now display correctly after reloading Slack via Ctrl/Command+Shift+O. Our sincere thanks for bearing with us and we're very sorry for any disruption this may have caused.

3:10 PM PST

We're making progress towards a total fix, but new image uploads going forward should render as expected. Work is ongoing to fix the images that were affected during this incident.

You're welcome to re-upload images that were previously affected if you need them before the complete fix is ready.

2:46 PM PST

No additional news to share just yet, but we're working as quickly as possible to identify and fix the issue of recently uploaded images not displaying properly on desktop. We appreciate your continued patience.

2:16 PM PST

Newly uploaded images should display correctly on mobile devices, but we're still digging into why they're not rendering correctly on the desktop application. Thanks for bearing with us.

1:46 PM PST

Some customers may see broken or empty placeholder images after they try to upload an image to a channel. We're looking into it and shall provide an update as we know more. Our apologies for the disruption.
