Incident

Degraded performance and connection issues for a very low percentage of users

Issue summary:
On November 17, 2020 from around 8:58 a.m. to 9:35 a.m. PST, a small number of users experienced intermittent issues, such as slowness within Slack, trouble loading Slack, and messages failing to send.

There were too many connections being sent to our query routing infrastructure, which resulted in requests being slow or failing to complete. We added more capacity to the infrastructure in order to handle more requests and prevent requests from being slow or failing to complete.

If you'd like to receive a Root Cause Analysis (RCA) report, please reach out to feedback@slack.com to request one. We'll send you the report once it's ready.

Note: We've added new details in the second paragraph of this message, as we've uncovered more information about what happened.

10:18 AM PST

We’re confident that customers shouldn’t be experiencing troubles with performance in Slack after monitoring for the last hour. Our team is still reviewing the cause of the issue, and we’ll provide a summary here once our investigation is complete.

10:37 AM PST

We've isolated the issue and users should no longer be having problems with Slack. We're still working towards a full resolution and we'll be back with another update in 30 minutes.

10:04 AM PST

Some people may be having trouble loading Slack via the desktop and mobile apps, as well as web browser. This is currently affecting a very low percentage of users but may result in general slowness and issues with sending messages. We’re investigating, and we'll have more information to share in 30 minutes.

Failed audio on Slack calls

Issue summary:
On November 17, 2020 starting at 10:37 a.m. PST, some users were unable to send and receive audio when using Slack calls on desktop.

This issue was caused by a recent code change that we then reverted to resolve the issue. By 12:03 p.m. PST, all affected users were able to send and receive audio after reloading.

4:53 PM PST

We've released a fix for Slack calls, and upon reload (Command/Control + R), audio should be working again. If you are experiencing any further trouble please reach out to feedback@slack.com. Thank you for bearing with us.

12:09 PM PST

Some users may be experiencing failed audio with Slack calls on desktop. We're looking into it now. We appreciate your patience.

Note: We've updated this message to say desktop, as the issue wasn't only impacting the desktop app. Slack calls in Google Chrome were also impacted.
